Planting tips
Quick planting guide
- 1Site selection: deep, well-drained loam soils above 1,500m with annual rainfall of 1,000–1,600mm.
- 2Dig 90cm × 90cm × 90cm pits a month before planting. Separate topsoil from subsoil.
- 3Mix the topsoil with two debes of manure, 200g DAP and 50g of agricultural lime. Refill, watering as you go.
- 4Plant at the onset of long rains. Stake the seedling and protect the graft union from soil contact.
- 5Apply 30cm of mulch and irrigate every 5–7 days through the first dry season.
- 6Prune for an open canopy in year two; thin fruit in year three to size up the harvest.
